Darjeeling has derived its name from Dhor-je Ling, the Place of Vajra, an erstwhile Buddhist monastery situated at the Observatory established for the propagation of the mystic system of Vajrayana Buddhism. This Himalayan region with its soothing climate however attracted the attention of the then British rulers who developed it into a sanitorium for their troops. Very soon it turned into a heaven for tourists, sightseers, botanists, planters, mountaineers and trekkers. The most commanding view of the Divine Kanchenjunga seated on the throne of the dark blue forests, the lush green tea gardens down the valleys, the mellow red glow of the rising sun forming into different shapes and sizes cast a magic spell on the onlookers. It is however the mantra laid prayer flags fluttering atop the monasteries, the solemn ting-a-ling bells of the temples and shrines, the colourful processions of the people singing and dancing to the tune of their unique musical instruments specially on festive occasions cannot fail to captivate the interest and imagination of the tourists coming from far and near.
